We have started our discussion from
the importance of POS systems in the retail industry then we went to the basic
terminology of the system now we are discussing it in detail. A retail point of sale
system includes items like
Monitor or screens with touch facility, receipt printer, cash boxes, barcode
scanners, debit/credit card reader or swap machines. Due to the introduction of
touch screen facility need of mouse or keyboards is almost diminished. These
items run freely with the help of software which is created for retail industry
only and acknowledge all the small as well as big things from sales, returns,
exchanges, gift cards, discounts, etc. All these functions run on few rules which get synchronized with the software hence tension-free working.
The point of sale software can also perform functions
like various marketing promotional offers, foreign currency management, and
multiple modes of payments with ease.
With the help of this software and systems, one can reduce the risk of faults to a
minimal level. As all the working is done
through technology, so the chances of human error in the working are negligible.
Most of the POS units helps in the
front office work and everyone has this limited knowledge only but the real
picture is that POS system
is used rigorously at both front desk as well as in the back office. At front desk, it is mainly used for making sales and
getting the payment but in back office,
it works and handles the functions like inventory
control and management, purchasing, conciliation of data gathered at the front desk regarding the customers transacted
at the store, sales trends and cost/price/profit
analysis and what not.
